About the Artist & Teacher

Shivani Joshi is a Portland-based performing artist. Throughout her childhood she studied Indian classical music and dance with local teachers. She completed her Hindustani vocal music bachelor’s diploma under the tutelage of her mother, Portland’s Hindustani musician and teacher, Dr. Nisha Joshi. As a child, Shivani studied Bharatanatyam Indian Classical Dance and performed a Bharatanatyam Arangetram or solo dance debut under the tutelage of Ms. Sivagami Vanka. After graduating from the University of Oregon with a B.S. in Psychology, she received a scholarship from the Government of India (ICCR) to study at the reputed National Institute of Kathak Dance, New Delhi. She earned an Honors Diploma under the tutelage of Pandit Rajendra Kumar Gangani, doyen of Jaipur Gharana Kathak.

 

Shivani received her master’s degrees in Kathak dance and Hindustani vocal music at Guru Nanak Dev University, Punjab, India. She has studied classical and light music from Ms. Kamal Rani and Mr. Sukhdev Sagar, respectively, of Jalandhar, Punjab.

 

She sings khayal, bhajans, ghazals, and folk songs and plays the harmonium and pakhawaj instruments. She has not only performed at various dance festivals, such as the prestigious Kathak Mahotsav (Delhi) in the choreography of Pandit Rajendra Gangani, Maharana Kumbh Sangeet Samaroh (Udaipur), Lovely Professional University Kathak Nritta Mahotsav (Punjab), Times of India Navratri Utsav (Chennai) to name a few, but has also sung for many Kathak performances, productions, and recordings, as well as music programs on national television in India. Shivani has also given several solo vocal and dance concerts in India and US.
